After years of waiting, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is set to be released in less than a month. However, the amount of reshooting done on the movie may have been exaggerated as it has now been confirmed that all of the reshoots resulted in a single new scene being added to the movie.
When the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League was first announced, there were rumors that the cast would reassemble, and large portions of the movie would be reshot. While speaking to The Playlist, producer Deborah Snyder clarified that those reports of extensive reshoots of new footage are not accurate. She explains that there was a total of four days of reshoots that resulted in one new scene which is reportedly the Knightmare sequence that was teased in the newest trailer and that includes Jared Leto’s Joker. The scene is also said to include Batman (Ben Affleck), Mera (Amber Heard), and Flash (Ezra Miller).
However, with the tight timeline of the production and the COVID restrictions, even filming one new scene came with plenty of challenges. Snyder explained that Miller was in London filming his part in Fantastic Beasts 3 at the time and could not return for reshoots. Instead, he was filmed on the set of Fantastic Beasts 3 in front of a green screen and was directed by Zack Snyder over a Zoom call. Snyder also explained that the most intensive work came from completing the thousands of visual effects shots in order to achieve the original vision.
The release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League continues to be a fascinating Hollywood story that started with behind-the-scenes drama going all the way back to 2017. Following the huge outcry online from fans, Warner Bros. allowed Snyder to complete his vision for the movie which will debut as a four-hour movie next month on HBO Max.
While the reports of extensive reshoots were never confirmed in the first place, the reveal that only one new scene was shot is a bit of a surprise. No doubt fans will be disappointed by the news, but judging from the latest trailer, there does seem to be a lot of new material added back in from Snyder’s original round of filming. It will be interesting to see just how much the two versions of the movie differ. As much excitement as there has been for this movie, it’s hard to imagine that the structure and the story could really be changed drastically even with the extended runtime. Still, Snyder clearly has his own vision for the DCEU and it is exciting to see what he has in store for fans after a long wait.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on March 18.
