XSEED Games has confirmed that Ys: Memories of Celceta will be heading to PS4 on June 9, 2020. A new trailer revealed the date along with giving us a glimpse of the game in action. It doesn’t look dramatically different from the PC release a few years back, though it will have an accompanying PS4 theme you can use.

The game will be available both physically and digitally along with a $40 “digital deluxe” edition. The latter comes with a deluxe PS4 theme and a digital copy of the Ys 25th Anniversary Soundtrack (which includes songs from Ys Origin and Ys I-VII). The collector’s edition for PS4 doesn’t come with the same goodies as the Vita one released in 2012.

Even without all of that extra stuff, Memories of Celceta is an excellent game. The Ys series, in general, is one of the best JRPGs around, but Memories of Celceta really expanded the gameplay beyond the scope of its PS2 iterations. Now you have full control of protagonist Adol’s party members and there’s a more in-depth combo system to play with.

If you’re wondering why this post may sound redundant, that’s because Memories of Celceta already released in Japan for PS4 last May. Whatever held up certification for a western release must have recently been cleared, hence the new trailer and announcement. Better late than never, as they say.

If you have any interest in RPGs, though, make sure to pick this up. The PS4 is also home to Ys Origin, but that plays pretty differently to this release. Memories of Celceta is kind of a precursor to what we’d get in Ys VIII (and by extension, the upcoming Ys IX). You’re not a single character and it could almost be equated to an old-school RPG.

One could say that Memories of Celceta loses the charm of the original series, which was almost like a riff on The Legend of Zelda. Expanding a game to make its combat more in-depth isn’t really a bad thing, at least in my book. When it’s pulled off as well as Ys does it, then there’s really no reason to complain.
