More people can now get some extra bang for their buck out of watching YouTube videos on their gaming consoles. It’s been discovered that YouTube has rolled out support for HDR (High-Dynamic Range) on not just the Xbox Series X and Series S, but the last-gen Xbox One X and S as well.
So long as they have HDR-compatible monitors, users can now experience YouTube’s selection of HDR videos as they were meant to be seen, with brighter visuals and stronger colors. These visuals can be experienced at 4K and 60fps on the Xbox Series X, and at 1440p and 60fps on the Series S. Additionally, Engadget notes that users can check the “stats for nerds” panel to make sure the HDR is outputting correctly, but it should be noted that plenty of TVs either display a HDR prompt or automatically switch to a HDR mode when content starts playing.
If there’s any downside, it’s that the range of HDR videos on YouTube is still fairly small, though this includes test videos designed to highlight HDR’s capabilities. Most YouTubers have yet to start creating content in High Dynamic Range, but with any luck, the growing presence of it on YouTube and its different apps will encourage an increase in the number of high-quality videos for Xbox users to enjoy.
