Makoto Shinkai’s body of work speaks for itself. In just under two decades, the director has helmed some of the most well-regarded anime films of all time. He’s come a long way from his humble origins of selling VCDs of his indie projects at ComiKet, that’s for sure.
Hot off the heels of his landmark your name, Weathering With You hit Japanese theaters last year, and American theaters a tad earlier this year. It followed the budding romance between a young lad and lass, the latter of whom discovers a latent ability to control the weather. Naturally, it made some serious bank, raking in a little over 14 billion yen - and becoming the 7th highest grossing domestic movie of all time.
Now, you’ll be able to take this mammoth hit home, thanks to the fine folks over at GKids. They’ll be bringing Weathering With You to DVD and Blu-Ray in the US on September 14, and on top of that, will be offering up a snazzy collector’s set that’s due out in November. It’s bit of a wait, but definitely not as long as the gap between A Silent Voice’s US theatrical and home video release.
I managed to catch Weathering With You during its theatrical run, and loved every second of it. It’s a bit slower in parts than Shinkai’s more recent stuff, but its heartfelt sincerity and lush animation carried the whole movie for me.
