Every game that you’ve ever played on every PlayStation console may be available on the PS5. If you watched PlayStation’s Future of Gaming event last month, you may have got serious nostalgia vibes and now we may know why.
It has been discovered that Sony has filed for another patent that could shed light on how this would all work. The patent was filed for technology that would allow for old consoles to be emulated digitally, creating backward compatibility for every console that PlayStation has ever been—or will ever be—released.
First reported by Twitter user, @Renka_schedule, the patent would recreate the operating systems of old consoles so that you can run all of your favorite games without needing any additional hardware, although Sony has been famously tight-lipped about what will and will not be available on the PS5, though we do know for sure that most PS4 games will be available on the new console.
There is a lot of speculation on whether or not this technology would utilize the new “Create” button on the PS5 controller, however, it is impossible to say how Sony plans to actually use that button. What we do know is that PlayStation Now already offers a streaming service that allows players to play PS2, 3, and 4 games on the PS4 console, so it wouldn’t be too much of a leap to imagine that this technology will be expanded upon.
If you were getting started with gaming in the 90s, the Future of Gaming event last month felt really, really familiar. Almost as if it were a relaunch of the original PlayStation, with way better graphics. We got to see Oddworld for the first time in ages alongside Ratchet and Clank, and a new Spider-Man. Couple all of that with remastered versions of Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and now Tony Hawk: Pro Skater, and it feels like we’re back in the early 2000s again. If this patent is to be believed—and it seems likely—it is going to be a crazy good holiday this year.
