Your wish has been granted, as the Shantae artbook by UDON Entertainment is now available for pre-order. It is scheduled to release on December 1st, 2020.
According to Destructoid, the 224-page book will contain art from all five games in the series. It will feature the half-genie hero herself Shantae, Risky Boots, Rottytops, Sky, and Bolo. The hardcover will also have key artwork, rough concepts, experimentations of the art style, creature designs, and environments (the latest game in the series Seven Sirens won’t be interesting in that retrospect).
Shantae is a long-running 2D platforming series that began on the aging Game Boy Color hardware in 2002, and ever since, she’s left a mark in the indie gaming scene. Due to fan feedback and requests for her to join the Super Smash Bros. roster, she actually made it as a spirit in Ultimate. Series creator Matt Bozon would also like to make an animated series based on the half-genie hero’s adventures after the amazing intro that Studio TRIGGER made.
Shantae and the Seven Sirens succeeded at bringing fun 2D platforming elements with multiple abilities to unlock along the way. The Metroidvania elements of the game made it fun to explore the world and see new areas. The bosses were also imaginative, and the levels were challenging, but not to a frustrating degree.
While the dungeon-like design of most of the environments were pretty dull to look at in Seven Sirens, the overall art of the Shantae series is stunning. There’s a lot of personality to each of the characters, and the style is super vibrant, especially when you explore the towns and above ground areas like Island West. It will be great to see all this art work come to life in this UDON Entertainment release.
