You can now run Doom in Minecraft thanks to a new mod that lets you run a virtual machine in-game.
This “play Doom in X” meme is getting out of hand. First it was playing Doom in your browser, which, ok, seems fine on its face. Maybe you just really want that original Doom experience but don’t want to go to the hassle of actually buying it on Steam. Fine. But then somebody figured out how to play Doom in Excel, and after that someone made Doom work in the Windows 10 Task Manager.
Now we’re playing games within games with Doom running inside Minecraft. This is almost as great as playing Doom within Doom.
We have Reddit user uDrunkMate and a mod called VM Computers to thank for this monstrosity. VM Computers is a new Minecraft mod that lets you create a working virtual computer within Minecraft. It essentially makes a working virtual machine that can actually run other software inside Minecraft, so long as you put the ISO in the correct folder.
After ordering the computer parts within Minecraft, you then build the computer and place it on your desk. Then walk up to it and interact to start playing.
It runs fairly well, all things considered. Sure, it has the framerate of playing the original MS-DOS Doom on a 486 processor, but it works.
I honestly don’t think there’s anywhere else for Doom to go at this point, but I’m sure I’ll be surprised to find out what Doom will plan on next.
