A new 2D RPG by the name of Shujinkou - whose primary goal is to help its players learn Japanese whilst enjoying an epic role-playing adventure - is currently in development.
Japanese is often considered to be one of the most challenging languages for non-native speakers to master, at the very least thanks to its three different writing systems. But it’s also an incredibly interesting and beautiful language, with an equally interesting culture that goes along with it.
Rice Games plans to step into the scene with Shujinkou (主人公) as a great way to help those looking to brush up on their Japanese. The game is apparently targeted at facilitating Japanese learning from levels N5 to N3, which is between beginner and moderate proficiency according to the Japanese Language Proficiency Test standards. These standards act as the officially recognized method to gauge a person’s fluency in Japanese and ranges from beginner (N5) to fluent (N1).
However, the developers reassure prospective players that the game will be enjoyable for anyone with an interest in the language, culture, or adventure RPGs in general, regardless of which level of proficiency you’re at:
We have designed Shujinkou so that those who are native or fluent in the language will have an equally, if not more fulfilling, experience using a language they have complete command of in this 50+ hour epic.
The focus is on delivering a decent dose of rich story and gameplay that allows players to learn and use Japanese to save the world and defeat the ‘Akuma.’ And it certainly does look like Shujinkou will be providing this and plenty more entertainment for gamers, linguists, and appreciators of unique visuals alike.
The latter is reminiscent of the gorgeous art style of the 2006 action-adventure game Okami, which the developers describe as a modernized style of Ukiyo-e - the art style which flourished in Japan between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Basically, if you’re even vaguely interested in anything Japanese, you’ll likely have a great time with this one. Shujinkou is slated for a 2021 release on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
