Why do bad things seem to always happen to good people? There was xQc, doing the right thing and freeing an unfortunate caged bear in Ghost of Tsushima. Who could have predicted the bear’s next move?

Whether you’re more of a Nintendo or Sony fan, this week is going to be a good one for gamers. Both Paper Mario: The Origami King and Ghost of Tsushima have finally launched. While The Origami King has proven quite divisive for its lack of RPG elements and puzzle-based battles, Sucker Punch’s action adventure title has drawn praise for its staggeringly realized setting and flowing combat.

Naturally, Ghost of Tsushima has been a hot topic among gamers, as it’s potentially one of the PlayStation 4’s last big exclusives. Whether it will go on to forge itself a Bloodborne-esque reputation, only time will tell. One thing we do know, however, is that there is a tremendous amount of secrets and surprises to discover within the game’s beautiful and expansive rendition of feudal Japan.

For xQc, though, no surprise in the game was as shocking as a certain troublesome bear.

Right around the midway point of a Tsushima stream, we’ll tell you in an entirely spoiler-free fashion that xQc found himself crossing blades with enemies on a small boat. Having athletically and gorily dealt with the enemy forces on the deck, he happened across a cage with an unfortunate bear inside. The popular streamer hastened to hit the R2 button and free the trapped animal – but this happened next.

As you can see, ineffectual flailing and non-firing with a bow isn’t an effective way to defeat anything in the game, let alone angry bears. Two casual headbutts later and xQc was spending two Resolve to revive. He hangs his head at the bear’s betrayal, pays said Resolve, and manages a few feeble stabs at low health before another soft-looking headbutt from the bear puts him down for good.

“What are the odds of that even happening? I don’t even know… what that was about. Why is there a bear in a cage,” xQc asked in the stream. The good news is that, as you’ll see in the full stream, xQc does learn from his mistake. Dashing straight back to the cage, he opens it and immediately takes cover, attempting to snipe the bear with his bow from range. After accidentally firing several arrows into the cage itself (nope, they wouldn’t go through the gaps in the bars), one finally hit its mark and xQc was able to claim his well-earned predator hide.

Final score: Bear 1, xQc 1. As gamers around the world prepare to dive into Ghost of Tsushima, they can rest assured that it’s going to be one heck of a ride – just make sure to keep an eye out for those bears.
