As expected, Xbox used some of its time at the E3 2019 Xbox Briefing to share addition details about its plans for the next generation of console gaming. Although fans didn’t actually get to see a new console on stage, some new specs and a release window for Project Scarlett were announced.
Additional details arrived after the show that do offer some extra insight about what the console will be like. There was a lot of talk about cloud-based gaming and the streaming future, during the conference, but apparently that is all still going to be option. That’s right, Project Scarlett will include a disc drive for gamers who prefer to play games locally with a physical copy.
During an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Phil Spencer explained that physical disc gaming is still very much a part of the future that the company has planned.
“I want to be very descriptive, because I am not trying to confuse anybody about what the options are. I want to give people choice, and right now physical is a choice that millions of people love.”
During the interview, he went on to explain how important he feels it is to provide choices for gamers and to make it clear what the options are. He used the All Digital Xbox One S as an example of this.
Until everyone around the world has consistently fast internet with no restrictions, it seems like there will always be the demand for a disc drive. It’s very reassuring to hear that Xbox is listening to consumers and staying in touch with what different types of gamers want out of a console experience.
“So even when we put out things like the Xbox One S All-Digital edition, we are very clear with the name because I am not trying to confuse anybody, that if you are somebody that has a library of discs, or that’s the way you want to acquire the content, then you should buy the Xbox One S, not the Xbox One S All-Digital…”
Project Scarlett launches holiday 2020.
