Every month, Xbox users who have an active Xbox Live subscription get treated with a few free games. These releases are usually staggered across the month, as many who picked up November’s Games with Gold may note. For example, Battlefield 1 has been available since November 1, Race the Sun has been available since November 16, Assassin’s Creed was available until November 15, and Dante’s Inferno is available until the end of November.

Luckily, this means that those who are just now picking up a subscription via a Black Friday or Cyber Monday deal are only missing out on the original Assassin’s Creed from these November Games with Gold, as the rest are still available to download for a limited time. Moving forward, though, players will get access to the following games for December’s Games with Gold: Q.U.B.E 2, Never Alone, Dragon Age 2, and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.

  • Q.U.B.E. 2, December 1-31, 2018 Never Alone, December 16 - January 15, 2-19 Dragon Age 2, December 1 - 15, 2018 Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction - December 16 - 31, 2018.

Per usual, all four of the aforementioned titles will be available on Xbox One, with the last two games–that is, Dragon Age 2 and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction–being available thanks to Xbox’s backward compatibility feature. The first two, however, cannot be played on an Xbox 360. For those unaware, here are how each of the games rank up on Metacritic:

  • Q.U.B.E. 2 (78%) Never Alone (66%) Dragon Age 2 (79%) Mercenaries (86%)

All in all, this seems like a rather run of the mill line-up for December, with Microsoft not even including any real spirit of the season here. Still, players get to explore an alien planet, experience the oral tale of the Inupiaq girl Nuna and her Arctic fox, defend Kirkwall as its champion Hawke, or attempt to prevent a nuclear war and make a profit in war-torn North Korea–all for free. And as always, it’s hard to beat free.

The next batch of Xbox Games with Gold go live on December 1, 2018.
