Tell Me Why, the follow-up to Life is Strange, an adventure game from Dontnod Entertainment, will be available on August 27. The game, which will be released in three episodes exclusively for Xbox One and Microsoft Windows, centers on twins Tyler and Alyson Ronan, who travel home to Alaska after Tyler has transitioned to male.

The first transgender playable character from a major studio, Tyler was developed by Dontnod and GLAAD in order to make him an “authentic representation of the trans experience.” Tell Me Why explores the twins’ childhood home and relies on flashbacks to provide players with an understanding of how their upbringing affected them. Players will be expected to divide their time between both siblings.

Tasked with making decisions for the twins based on their interpretation of past events, players’ choices will ultimately decide the game’s outcomes. As with most Dontnod releases, Tell Me Why, a narrative-driven game, incorporates supernatural elements. The game was announced during Microsoft’s Xbox London event on November 14, 2019.

Dontnod had been previously criticized for the random episode release dates for Life Is Strange, a graphic adventure game focused on a teen photographer who has the ability to travel back in time and cause a butterfly effect. This time, they say they will release the episodes of Tell Me Why, a PC and Xbox exclusive, in quick succession beginning on August 27.

Despite the criticism, Dontnod, a game developer based in Paris, has been praised for inclusiveness. The first Life is Strange, which was released in five episodes in 2015, featured a lesbian relationship between Chloe and Max, and the second Life is Strange, portrayed Latinx youth in America.

Dontnod is also due to release Twin Mirror, a third-person adventure game in which players control Sam, a journalist who returns to his hometown of Basswood, West Virginia for an investigation. Players will explore the real world and Sam’s Mind Palace to discover clues, as well as, listen to Sam’s inner voice, the Double, which can either help or harm the investigation.
