Gamers have been scratching their heads over an ambiguous codename that appeared on Microsoft’s Game Development Kit and Windows OS Libraries. The Devkit codename sparked rumors within the community that a third all-digital Xbox may be entering into the market.
The strange codename was spotted by software developer and reverse engineer @bllyhlbrt on Twitter last week that appeared within the Xbox One OS. The name joined the original Xbox Series X codename ‘Anaconda’ as well as ‘Lockhart’ which is speculated to be joining Microsoft’s catalogue as the company’s ‘budget’ version of the Series X. The executive vice-president of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer has previously referenced the company’s development of multiple consoles and a additional “family” of Xbox devices.
Twitter users, of course, had their say but threw in a few conceivable guesses as to what ‘Edinburgh’ is hiding. One account seemed certain that it was code for a VR headset but most comments circled around to the Xbox Series X digital edition rumor. The gaming community on Twitter also pointed out that gamers should just be patient and wait for the big announcements that are expected to happen during Microsoft’s showcase later on in the month.
Another codename that has been spotted floating around the OS was ‘Dante’, which is allegedly there to allow developers access into Project Lockhart’s profiling mode. A developer for Void 2D highlighted the possibility of ‘Lockhart’ being a disguise for the Xbox Series S devkit and ‘Edinburgh’ posing as the retail version of the console. One codename that hasn’t been speculated over much is ‘Court’ that programmers seem to be less interested in.
The codename, featuring Scotland’s capital, could also be something less prominent than a third console. WindowsCentral reporter Jez Cordon commented that it could be an XCloud server board for Scarlett while other debaters thought it could be another ecosystem platform. Microsoft has a habit of naming new hardware after random cities as the Xbox One S was codenamed ‘Edmonton’ and the Kinect motion sensor was named ‘Natal’.
With Microsoft hosting its Xbox Series X showcase further into July, gamers may not need to wait long in order for the mystery to be solved. It was also expected that Halo fans will get their first look at some Infinite gameplay, as well as more reveals into the next-gen console’s exclusive game library.
