Prior to Disney’s acquisition of Fox, there were rumors that The New Mutants movie would feature an after-credits appearance by major villain Mr. Sinister, who was reportedly going to be played by either Daniel Craig or Jon Hamm. However, X-Men film series producer Simon Kinberg has since offered some new clarification, revealing that Mr. Sinister was planned for an X-Men movie, but it wasn’t The New Mutants.
Kinberg explained that the end of X-Men: Apocalypse had a tease for Mr. Sinister’s debut by the reveal of the Essex Corp. This would have been followed up in the Channing Tatum Gambit movie that was in development. However, the Gambit movie was delayed frequently, and it has likely been canceled since Disney’s acquisition of Fox.
While Mr. Sinister was planned for the Channing Tatum Gambit movie, it wasn’t decided yet who would be playing the role. According to Kinberg, the casting process hadn’t even started yet, and so the rumors about Daniel Craig or Jon Hamm playing Mr. Sinister weren’t true.
It remains to be seen if Mr. Sinister will make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that Disney has control of the IP. It’s even possible that Disney will move forward with the Channing Tatum Gambit movie, but that seems unlikely at this point.
