Internet sleuthing has made a great deduction: An X-Com game is in the works by 2K Games for Xbox 360 and PC, whether they want to publicly admit it or not.

There were already rumors that a sequel to the longstanding tactical series was in production, but no confirmation came. 2K Boston head honcho Ken Levine publicly expressed his love for the series, mentioning he was still playing the old 2001 X-Com shooter X-Com: Enforcer. In the August of 2007, 2K Boston began running job listings for an “unidentified shooter”.

This week however, internet ninjas uncovered the resume of one Shamus Baker, who had worked with 2K Australia from January 2007 to April 2008, the same period of those infamous job listings. More importantly was the fact that his resume listed assisting with two projects during his stay: the first was Bioshock, and the second was X-Com…

His online-available resume has since been removed, most likely at the request of 2K Australia themselves - however, if it’s on the internet for more than half of a nanosecond, chances are twenty people already saw it. With this newfound evidence, 2K were asked if they could confirm the development of a new X-Com game. Here’s what they said:

It’s amazing they still won’t confirm anything, since further internet ninja-sleuthing discovered that it turns out Infogrames bought X-Com’s original publisher MicroProse back in 2001, and then in 2004 Firaxis came into an agreement with Atari to retain the X-Com IP. Here’s where the nail hits the proverbial hammer: the US Patent and Trademark Office can show you that the X-Com license was transferred to Take-Two Interactive when it acquired Firaxis in 2005.

They’ve acquired the licensing, their staff members are involved with the game, people there have unintentional spilled the beans that these individuals have been working on an X-Com project - there you have it. Whether they want to admit it or not, 2K Games is working on a sequel to the X-Com series (though it’s unknown if it will be a shooter, if the series will return to it’s turn-based roots or even if a new gameplay genre will be used).

A toast to the internet ninjas for uncovering such good news!
