We here are TheGamer are sad to report that Byron “Reckful” Bernstein, a well-known streamer of World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, has died today by suspected cause of suicide. Rumors were circulating online earlier, when shortly after noon a Twitter user named Blue, an ex-partner of Bernstein, confirmed that he had in fact died. Bernstein’s roommate and others have also confirmed this to be true.

The news is a terrible blow for the gaming community with the loss of such a talented player and streamer, and emotions like when Desmond “Etika” Amofah died by suicide flood to the surface. Bernstein was one of the most skilled players in World of Warcraft, with 3000 ratings in several seasons, Rank 1 on his Rogue for six consecutive seasons from four to nine, and world first achievements.

On Twitch, Bernstein had an active channel and was constantly streaming for over 40,000 followers, branching out into Hearthstone and Asheron’s Call. At the time of writing, popular streamer Asmongold has over 125,000 viewers on Twitch while discussing Bernstein and his passing. Meanwhile, someone who has access to Reckful’s Twitch stream is running reruns of previous VODs, with over 30,000 viewers at the time of this writing.

So far, there does not appear to be any signs of distress on Bernstein’s social media accounts from earlier today, and this has come as a complete shock to everyone. Earlier in the year, we reported that viewers were showing increasing concern about Bernstein’s use of psilocybin after having “bad trips” while on stream.

While viewers raised concerns directly with Bernstein, he made two troubling statements in hindsight. First, he stated that he had been suicidal before, but not taking any medication, and that psilocybin was the only thing that kept him from “jumping over the edge.”

Social media has so far seen only an outpouring of support for friends and family of Bernstein. We too wish them the best, and we strongly encourage anyone with suicidal thoughts to contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (US), Crisis Services Canada (CA), Samaritans (UK), or Lifeline (AUS). Readers who reside outside of these regions can check this list for a hotline in your area.
