Due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed. The upcoming comic book movie was set to premiere in theaters on June 5, but its release has now been pushed back two months to August 14, 2020. Presumably, if the coronavirus situation is still not under control come August 14, then one has to imagine that there is a possibility of the film being delayed yet again.
The Wonder Woman 1984 movie delay was confirmed by star Gal Gadot on Twitter and her statement was re-tweeted by director Patty Jenkins. The tweet simultaneously revealed the new August 14 release date for Wonder Woman 1984, while also debunking rumors that the movie would get an early digital release. “I am looking forward to a brighter future ahead. Where we can share the power of cinema together again,” Gadot’s tweet reads.
Wonder Woman 1984 is just the latest movie delayed because of the coronavirus, but it’s one of the only ones to get a new release date. Most of the movies that have been delayed due to the virus have been pushed back indefinitely, with studios declining to commit to new dates at this time. A Quiet Place 2 would fall into that category.
The latest Fast and the Furious movie, F9, has been given a new release date, but its delay was pretty dramatic. Due to the coronavirus threat, F9 was delayed by an entire year, and now it won’t hit theaters until April 2, 2021. This puts a four year gap between main series Fast and the Furious releases, whereas the series had been putting out new movies fairly consistently every 2-3 years since its inception in 2001.
It will be interesting to see how many movies are delayed and how many opt for digital releases instead. Some movies that were only in theaters for a short time before the coronavirus situation exploded, like Disney/Pixar’s Onward, have had early digital releases, after all. However, it seems that the majority of upcoming new releases will simply move their release dates so that they can still open in theaters, as is the case with Wonder Woman 1984.
It will also be interesting to see how Wonder Woman 1984 does with critics. The original Wonder Woman stands as the highest-rated DCEU movie to date, so expectations are high for Wonder Woman 1984, to say the least.
Wonder Woman 1984 is set to premiere in theaters on August 14, 2020.
