Despite having access to a crossbow in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, players hardly use the weapon, essentially preferring a sword or one of the Signs when it comes to fighting enemies or taking on contracts. With the help of a recent mod however, the ranged weapon arsenal is greatly expanded and offers a variety of new weapons in return.
Simply known as Firearms, the mod adds a number of flintlock pistols into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as an alternative choice for crossbows. This does not mean that the mod reskins crossbows to look like flintlock pistols. On the contrary, Firearms adds fully operational flintlock pistols with their own types of ammunition and tiers. Players can use a flintlock pistol to deliver some serious firepower against foes that are considered to be a threat and not rely on a crossbow instead.
According to the mod’s description, it adds 10 flintlock pistols into the game and 7 types of ammunition at 3 tiers. Additionally, to make the mod a bit more realistic, players will have to craft the weapons and ammo by visiting various shops and acquiring the necessary materials. For example, before crafting bullets, players will have to find bullet molds in shops. Likewise, pistol diagrams will appear in blacksmith shops and players will have to purchase the diagrams before making a pistol. And as expected, the higher the level, the better the pistol will be.
One thing that the mod took into consideration was balancing. In order to not make the pistols overpowered, their damage scales with the difficulty of the game since enemy health is either increased or decreased. Another example pertains to a pistol’s use. Since the mod has been balanced enough to not make the pistols replace swords in terms of damage, the pistols should mainly be used as “finishers.” By the sound of things, the sword will have to be used to deal enough damage to an enemy before changing to a pistol and finishing that enemy off.
For players who may be interested in giving the Firearms mod a try and changing up their gameplay a little bit, they can check out the mod’s page over at Nexus mods.
