We’re nearly a month away from Resident Evil 2’s launch, and Capcom has ramped up marketing for the game considerably with plenty of screenshots, gameplay previews, trailers, and more. The company has also revealed some more information about Resident Evil 2, including whether or not the upcoming game will feature any new monsters not seen in the original 1998 release.
As recently revealed by Capcom, the Resident Evil 2 remake will not have any new monsters in the game. Players will instead take on the usual batch of zombies, Lickers, Mr. X, and other enemies that they encountered in the original release, albeit with new paint jobs. While this news may be disappointing to some players, it’s worth pointing out that some of the returning enemies will have some new tricks up their sleeves.
For example, zombies will be a different kind of threat in the Resident Evil 2 remake, and will be a bit more aggressive than players may remember. This is to compensate for the game’s over-the-shoulder camera, which will make it much easier to aim for headshots and the like. William Birkin, Resident Evil 2’s constantly mutating final boss, will also have some brand new forms that are sure to give players nightmares.
Even with the returning enemies having some new abilities and forms, some players may still be disappointed that the Resident Evil 2 remake isn’t adding any new monsters to the series. On the other hand, some players may just be happy to see their favorite monsters and moments from the original with significantly improved visuals, like the encounter with the giant sewer alligator, for instance.
It’s also worth pointing out that the lack of new monsters in Resident Evil 2 doesn’t mean that the game won’t have any surprises. Since it’s restructuring the narrative to have completely distinct stories for Leon and Claire, one has to imagine that there have been some changes to the plot.
Resident Evil fans will have a chance to see all the changes and surprises the upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake has in store when it launches next month.
Resident Evil 2 will launch on January 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
