Warzone’s latest update changed the weapons offered up in the Gulag and as with every change that has been made to the game so far, players aren’t happy.

Call of Duty waded into an already busy market back in March by launching Warzone, its own take on the battle royale genre. Being a CoD title attracted a large player base right off the bat, but in order to keep expanding and get non-CoD fans involved, developer Infinity Ward needed to find ways to set itself apart from established rivals such as Fortnite and Apex Legends.

One of the ways in which it has done that is with the inclusion of the Gulag. The first time a player gets downed by an enemy, rather than being sent back to the lobby to start over, they dragged to the Gulag. There, they will go one-on-one with another player who didn’t fare so well on the battlefield. The winner re-enters the fray for a second chance at glory.

On May 18, 2020, Warzone underwent its latest update, perhaps one of the biggest to date. One of the changes was a switch around of the weapons given to players in the Gulag — and people don’t appear to be fans of the change. Rather than pistols and shotguns, players now start the showdown with an assault rifle or submachine gun.

The argument is a fair one. That the new weapons added to the Gulag are meant for long-range battles. The Gulag is a pretty small room and featured short-range weapons. Some are also arguing that the skill required to make it out of the Gulag has now been all but removed. It’s now more of a case of who sees their rival first and fires off rounds than a game of skill where the better shot tended to be the player who won.

IW must be wondering what it got itself into right about now, as the developer can’t seem to make a change to the game without extensive backlash.
