Hollywood legend and star of Machete Danny Trejo has some interesting merch on his webstore, including a dozen signed Magic: The Gathering cards.
Head over to DannyTrejo.com and you’ll find plenty of Danny Trejo memorabilia to collect. There’s stickers, t-shirts, posters, and an entire collection of signed DVDs (new AND used) but one product he’s selling is a real head-scratcher: why on earth is Danny Trejo selling signed Magic cards?
At first, it sort of makes sense. The first card in the shop is the Trusty Machete, which shares a name with Danny Trejo’s famous Machete character. Then there’s Bone Saw and Throwing Knife, which is still sort of on-brand, technically. There’s the Oathworn Vampire which could be a reference to his film From Dusk ‘Til Dawn, and Dawn Of The Dead which Danny wasn’t in, but he has been in lots of zombie movies. From there, the connections become even harder to parse. What exactly does Danny Trejo have in common with Kambal, Consul of Allocation?
The justification seems to be in this announcement trailer for the Magic: The Gathering Arena open beta in 2018 where Danny plays streamer and card game enthusiast Day[9]’s roommate.
Danny’s turn as a cloying Magic expert is hilarious, and it makes sense that Magic fans would want to cards signed by the actor. You have to squint and cock your head to see the connection between Danny and the Sword of Vengeance, but A for effort.
