League of Legends coach Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann recently confirmed that G2 Esports teammates Luka “Perkz” Perkovic and Rasmus “Caps” Winther will be swapping roles once again. This puts Perkz back in the attack damage carry position and brings Caps back to mid for the 2020 Summer Split.

The duo proved doubters wrong in 2019 when G2 initially brought in Caps and moved Perkz from the mid lane to the bot lane. They garnered criticism again when they role swapped ahead of the 2020 season, but silenced the critics when they swept Fnatic in the finals to win the 2020 LEC Spring Split. Now, the two stars are ready to swap again. But is it the right call?

It’s no secret how much G2 has dominated Europe since entering the league in 2016. Their play style, accurately dubbed “controlled chaos” by team owner Carlos “ocelote” Rodríguez Santiago, leaves their European foes dumbfounded and asking themselves, “what just happened?” The role swap of Caps and Perkz earlier this year only accentuated this type of play.

Despite the team’s success in 2020, Caps was on the receiving end of a lot of criticism following his transition to the bot lane. His attack damage carry play was shaky at times and Perkz’s prior performance as a bot-laner was on par with the likes of the legendary Martin “Rekkles” Larsson. Many were left wondering why these two even swapped lanes to begin with. They were already one of the top teams in the world before the swap, so why shake things up?

Things ended up working out for G2 in the 2020 spring season, and the haters were once again silenced. But even though they won the spring title, should they switch back? After all, Caps’ performance was questionable and even though they won the European title, G2’s international opponents may be less prone to fall for their maneuvers.

After winning their whopping seventh title in just nine splits, G2’s eyes have moved past Europe and are now firmly focused on the World Championship. Caps has impressively made the Worlds finals for the past two consecutive years, both times playing in the mid lane. G2 had their strongest run ever in 2019, with Caps in the mid lane and Perkz in the bot lane. Many analysts claim that support Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle has better synergy with Perkz than he does with Caps. So, given all this information, maybe it is a good idea to swap back. If the team wants to win Worlds, maybe putting Caps in the mid lane and Perkz in the bottom lane gives them their best chance to do so.

But what if it doesn’t? Is it possible that despite what many people think, G2 is a better team overall with Caps as their ADC? If “controlled chaos” is what they want to create on Summoner’s Rift, why not keep Caps as their bot laner? Even if Perkz is a slightly better ADC, why not give into the chaos? The chaos is what thrust G2 into the wild-yet-spectacular team they are today.

A western squad has never won Worlds. Asian teams have dominated the international scene since League of Legends reached the region. If G2 wants to be the first western team to win it all, maybe giving into the chaos is the way to do it.
