Battlefield VI’s setting still remains a mystery, but with Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare reaching the top, DICE will likely follow. After jumping between time periods, veterans have been wanting the series to get back to its roots.

Battlefield VI has been confirmed to release in 2021/2022 on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. While many fans have eagery awaited the next game in the Bad Company series, we could expect a push back to modern times. Seeing that EA fell short on sales with Battlefield 5, returning to modern times might be its only option.

Even though Battlefield V sold over seven million copies, it fell well short of meeting sales expectations.  The World War setting has become very over-saturated with the number of games being released. Fans of the FPS genre have been stuck with this single setting for a long period of time, leaving things to become dull and repetitive.

EA and DICE face a large issue, and that is Call of Duty. If it chooses to keep the setting in the past, Battlefield will most likely die. Choosing a future or even a present-day setting could, at the very least, lead to some heavy competition.

A modern-day setting with violence is likely to stir up some controversy in the media, which would be good for Battlefield. Modern Warfare blew up in the media with its portrayal of realism and gruesome warfare, so much so that it garnered even more game sales.

Battlefield moving back to the present and focusing on that style of gameplay would not only bring back fans who left after growing tired of the game’s settings, but could also bring newer players into series. While Battle Royals are still a popular game mode, the series might also be able to gather a large audience by creating a mode like Call of Duty’s Warzone. Battlefield is known for destructible environments and vehicles, so bringing this could level the playing field between the two giants.
