Gamers have been exploring the land of Azeroth for decades, ever since the first real-time strategy game was released in the 1990s. Many of the same characters still reside in the World of Warcraft, and they’re an essential part of the ongoing story and past lore.
World of Warcraft has become a pop culture icon, so even if someone doesn’t play the game, they would be familiar with some of these characters. Their distinct personalities and traits are what keeps the World of Warcraft lore machine humming. Without further ado, here are a few of the characters that match up to Western zodiac signs, giving some insight into player favorites, heroes, and villains.
12 Aquarius - Jaina Proudmoore
The Aquarius person is fiercely independent and uncompromising, often taking on a leadership role in times of crisis. However, they also tend to be cold and aloof, retreating from emotional connections. That pretty much describes Jaina Proudmoore perfectly, so this is the Warcraft NPC for those born in Aquarius. She currently resides on Theramore Isle, in the ancestral home of her family.
11 Pisces - Tyrande Whisperwind
The gentle, wise Pisces person shuns grandstanding and despises cruelty. Normally a quiet person, they can become a serious force to be reckoned with when challenged. Tyrande Whisperwind is an interesting parallel to this sign. She was always a leader among her people but became more than that when she and her partner, Malfurion, stopped Queen Azshara’s reign of terror. She can still be found in the Night Elf cital city, Darnassus.
10 Aries - Arthas Menethil
Arthas is one of the more interesting and tragic characters in the Azerothian NPC pantheon. He’s similar to an Aries person, with his determination and compassion driving his actions when the story begins.
However, as it sometimes happens with Aries, he was overwhelmed by his more aggressive impulses and became a symbol of death and betrayal. You can play Arthas in earlier RTS games, but he reappeared as an NPC in WoW as the Lich King in the third expansion.
9 Taurus - Malfurion Stormrage
Dependable, honest, and shunning the spotlight, Mulfurion Stormrage and the Taurus person have a lot in common. Tyrande was able to depend on his strength during the War of the Ancients, and a Pisces woman and Tauran man are an ideal match. He also introduced Druidism to the Night Elf people, an example of how a Taurus works for the greater good of everyone. You can find him with his partner in Darnassus or locations such as Mount Hyjal.
8 Gemini - Medivh
Medivh should have been the guardian of Azeroth, but instead, he introduced a new age of conflict and bloodshed to an already unstable planet. That’s not just a reference to the Gemini’s reputation for having two faces. Both Medivh and the Gemini person are curious and active, searching for answers and sharing ideas. These skills can be used for both good and evil, as any Gemini person or Medivh could tell us.
7 Cancer - Syvanas Windrunner
It’s all about family and history with a Cancer person, and so it also is with Sylvanas Windrunner. Her past is a tragic one, and she’s still bitter about how her living existence came to an end. The memory of a Cancer is long and often holds a grudge.
In life, Sylvanas was all of the good things associated with Cancer; compassionate and creative. In death, she epitomizes Cancer at its worst; manipulative and secretive. The current Queen of the Forsaken is the ruler of the Horde in the retail game and you can usually find her in the Throne Room of Undercity.
6 Leo - Queen Azshara
It was only recently that Queen Azshara appeared as an NPC in the game, but before then she was one of the most influential characters in Azerothian history. Beautiful, powerful, and born into a powerful ruling caste, Azshara was very much like a Leo person. The most admired sign in the zodiac does have some negative traits, such as conceit and arrogance, which is how Azshara went from being the leader of the Night Elves to living at the bottom of the ocean.
5 Virgo - Cairne Bloodhoof
Cairne was one of the original founders of the Horde and was the first leader to join Thrall after he helped save the Tauren from destruction. He works hard, looks for practical solutions, and keeps the welfare of his people first and foremost. This is exactly how a Virgo would behave, often bearing the burdens of others and putting work before play.
4 Libra - Thrall, Son Of Durotar
He’s the leader of the Horde, who are supposed to be the “bad guys,” but he’s one of the most benevolent, powerful, and just leaders in the game. Only Thrall could walk such a tightrope, making him similar to a person born under the sign of Libra.
There’s also Thrall’s status as a Shaman to consider. This is a class that communes with the elements, either as a healer or to deal damage, so it helps if you love harmony and the outdoors as the Libra does.
3 Scorpio - Illidan Stormrage
Deeply loyal and extremely stubborn, Scorpio can also be jealous and secretive. The character of Illidan was always close to his Taurus-like brother Malfurion, which isn’t surprising as these two signs are often close.
As it sometimes happens with a Scorpio, their passions can get the better of them, and much the same thing happened to Illidan. This character is the face of the marketing blitz that ushered in the Burning Crusade, and he’s still the last boss in the Black Temple raid.
2 Sagittarius - Vol’jin
It’s not only the symbolic parallel with the Hunter class that connects the sign of the archer and Vol’jin, the leader of the Darkspear Trolls. Despite his sincere loyalty to Thrall, the freedom and safety of his tribe was always the most important goal, and this is the same stance a Sagitarrius would take. Vol’jin, in keeping with the Troll culture, also isn’t afraid to speak his mind, another common trait with the Sagittarius.
1 Capricorn - Magni Bronzebeard
The ruling family of Stormwind was fortunate to have Magni Bronzebeard on their side. He’s a careful planner and fierce fighter who refuses to compromise. That’s great if you’re a wartime king but it doesn’t bode well for your personal life. Capricorns, who have many of the same traits, also deals with these kinds of issues. Capricorn has the reins but tends to hold them too tightly, driving away the very people they would rather draw closer.
