Astrology is the art of divining how people interact with the world around them based on the positioning of celestial objects. It can be great fun to read one’s horoscope and share memes based on your sign with others, but can Astrology be incorporated into the video games we love?

Some Pokémon games like the Mystery Dungeon series have experimented with choosing the player’s Pokémon based on their personality. We can take this one step further and change the intricate process of choosing a starter Pokémon by assigning one to each zodiac sign, but which Pokémon will yours be in that case?

12 Aries - Scorbunny

Starting off the list with the confident and passionate ram, Aries is a fire sign that is best embodied by the determination and enthusiasm of Galar’s adorable Scorbunny. Scorbunny is dedicated and will work tirelessly to succeed, much like the soccer players it is based on. Scorbunny can also be mischievous and a troublemaker, fitting perfectly with the sometimes impulsive and attention-seeking nature of Aries.

Scorbunny’s final evolution, Cinderace, has a higher Base Attack than Incineroar, the wrestler Pokémon invited to Smash Ultimate. This proves how determined Aries can be, never giving up and fighting with everything they have.

11 Taurus - Bulbasaur

Taurus are more than just the stubborn bull people assume them to be. People born with their Sun in Taurus are more often calm, cool, and collected, while also being truly motivated. That is perfectly befitting of Bulbasaur, who is protective of its family and friends and can calm almost any incident or argument. Bulbasaur is kind and intelligent, able to mediate and keep the peace amongst the group, much like Tauruses do in real life.

Unfortunately, their stubbornness may make it very difficult to drag them away from their self-assigned role of peacemaker, which was the case for Ash’s Bulbasaur in the anime. If a Taurus comes to trust someone, they will give them the world.

10 Gemini - Tepig

The sign of the Twins fits perfectly with Tepig and its evolutionary line: while Pignite and Emboar are seen as “feisty and outgoing,” Tepig is a more “laid-back and bashful” Pokémon. Geminis are adaptable, outgoing, and smart, though they can be seen as nosy or impulsive. Tepig are wandering Pokémon, searching for berries to roast and eat, though sometimes it can burn them from overexcitement (or impulsiveness). Similarly, Geminis are known to go with the flow, unburdened by the weight of schedules or arbitrary expectations, Tepig’s lifestyle to a T.

9 Cancer - Mudkip

Cancers are known for their loyalty and intuition, as well as their charm and nostalgic qualities. No Pokémon is better represented by Cancer than Mudkip, who will forever exist as a nostalgic internet meme. It is difficult to hate Mudkip, and the same can be said for many famous Cancers such as actor Tom Hanks.

The Pokémon Center’s website describes Mudkip as “hard-working, hard-battling Pokémon that any Trainer should be proud to call friend,” as well as “loyal, steadfast, and true.” It is good to remember that loyalty goes both ways, however; just like relationships are based on mutual trust and experiences, a Mudkip will trust a capable trainer who proves themselves.

8 Leo - Snivy

Leos love the spotlight, as long as it’s the spotlight they want. Whether it’s praise from their peers or the joy of victory on the battlefield, Leo and Snivy are one and the same, despite Snivy being a Grass-type.

Snivy is known for its pride, which borders on smugness at times, and is considered by many to be the most popular starter Pokémon of Generation V. Emphasis on appearance and reception from the world around them is a Leo specialty, but this doesn’t mean all Leos are vain. The best Leos are protective, just, and natural leaders, all traits of Ash’s Snivy from the Pokémon anime.

7 Virgo - Cyndaquil

Virgos are considered the shyest sign, but perhaps analytical and careful is a more apt description. Either way, Cyndaquil fits the bill, a cautious Pokémon known for its timidness and its penchant of curling up in a ball. Both Cyndaquil and Virgos are hard workers, with patience and kindness in spades. What some interpret as quietness is often analysis in Virgos, assessing situations and information in their head. While some may enjoy the thrill of battle, Cyndaquil prefers to avoid center-stage, knowing how overwhelming it can be.

6 Libra - Popplio

Libras may be preoccupied with balance, but no one is better at balancing than Popplio, especially if it’s on their nose. Popplio makes the perfect Libra with its love of humor and entertaining others, becoming more of a social seal rather than a social butterfly.

They often aim to please, which can lead to them being the butt of a joke or walked all over, and no other starter can understand than feeling better than the clownish Sea Lion Pokémon. Making sure to find oneself and believe in one’s own ideals is an important lesson that can be seen throughout Popplio’s evolutionary line, evolving into the confident and respected Primarina.

5 Scorpio - Squirtle

Scorpios could be considered the cool, older sibling of the Water signs, and few Pokémon are cooler than Squirtle. With a magnetic personality and a curious disposition, everyone will be flocking to be friends with such loyal and passionate beings as Scorpios. They value honesty and are unaffected by others’ opinions towards them, part of what makes them so cool.

Like the Squirtle Squad, some Scorpios can be controlling and vengeful, especially if their trust is broken by someone close. When they find their purpose, however (such as firefighting), wonderful things can happen.

4 Sagittarius - Chimchar

“On the move” and “to the point” are phrases that describe both Sagittarius signs and Chimchar thoroughly. To play as Chimchar in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, the personality of the player must be either Naive or Impish, both traits assigned to Sagittarius folks.

Optimism and urge for adventure can often lead to naivety and recklessness, and Chimchar has an air of innocent mischief impossible not to love. Such genuine enthusiasm and openness are to be cherished and protected at all costs, both in a Sagittarius and in Chimchar.

3 Capricorn - Treecko

Once a Capricorn’s mind is set on something they believe is achievable, they will become unstoppable. Hoenn starter Treecko’s undeniable dedication and discipline are what makes it the perfect Capricorn Pokémon, as the Pokédex describes it as “cool, calm, and collected.” Treecko is fiercely protective of its home and whatever it dedicates itself to, a level of ambition found in many Capricorns.

This Earth sign is grounded in reality, and though it can make them uptight at times, Treecko’s hardy disposition allows it to take on the real world without its head in the clouds.

2 Aquarius - Froakie

Though an Air sign, Aquarius fits perfectly with Kalos’ water-dwelling frog starter. Aquarius signs are analytical by nature, appearing easygoing but always observant of the world around them. Froakie’s Pokédex entry is interestingly similar, saying that “Beneath its happy-go-lucky air, it keeps a watchful eye on its surroundings.”

Aquarius are also independent and unorthodox, the quintessential traits of a Ninja, Froakie’s final evolutionary stage. Aquarius can be assertive about their particular way of living, but given the right space and opportunities, they can shine as brightly as some of the most creative and enchanting people out there.

1 Pisces - Piplup

Pisces fall in love easily, whether it’s with people close to them, their passions, or life itself. They are highly attuned to the world around them, which often leads them to enjoy nature, especially water and swimming. They also tend to gravitate towards magical themes and elements, all of which point towards Piplup being perfect for Pisces.

Not only does Piplup fall in love in the anime, but in the Pokémon Anime episode “One Big Happiny Family!”, Piplup stumbles upon some magician’s equipment and performs some magic tricks with cards and scarves. Though they both can be easily distracted or have unrealistic expectations, Piplup is easy to adore, fitting with the likable nature of most Pisces.
