PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny revealed many details about the PlayStation 5 in an interview published earlier this week. Cerny also confirmed that the PS5 release date isn’t in 2019, begging the question, when will the console be released?

The most popular theory about the PS5 release date is 2020. This is partly because it makes a good amount of sense. The PS5 may not be ready to release to the public just yet but it would be highly unusual for Sony to share anything about its next-generation console if that console is more than two years away. It seems far more likely that Sony is gearing up towards a holiday 2020 release date for the PlayStation 5, which would put the console’s launch about 18 months away.

The console’s rumored games also hint at a 2020 PS5 release date. During the interview, Cerny suggested that Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding may be a cross-generation game, releasing on the PS5 as well as the PS4. Kojima has confirmed that he is aiming to release the game before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which begin on July 24, 2020.

Whenever Death Stranding is released on PS4, Sony is unlikely to want to release the PS5 version of the game much more than a year after the PS4 version’s launch. Doing so could mean that Death Stranding loses its appeal as a PS5 game. After more than a year, it may not be an effective sales tool for the PS5.

There have been growing rumors about Horizon Zero Dawn 2 as well. Voice actor Janina Gavankar confirmed that the game is in development and looks “incredible.” Another rumor suggested that Horizon Zero Dawn 2 will release in 2021. Development on the game seems to be quite far along (if Gavankar’s comments are to be believed) which all supports the idea that the game will be available on PS5 a few months after launch in early 2021, not late 2021 at launch.

It’s not yet known when Sony will officially unveil its new console and confirm the PS5 release date. The company is skipping E3 2019, but could make an appearance at E3 2020, getting fans excited ahead of a late 2020 launch.
