Gamers all over were given a real blast-from-the-past during the second day of Comic-Con@Home as the long-dormant video game network G4TV teased a return in some form. A video tweeted out over the network’s official Twitter account leads viewers through a warehouse filled with gaming paraphernalia before landing on a video of the game Pong. This is followed by the phrase, “We never stopped playing” and the year 2021, clearly hinting at a return for the network. While this news has sent fans into a frenzy of speculation on what will be returning and when here are a few things on our wishlist for the gaming network!
The Return of Fan-Favorite Programs
Hearing the name G4 most likely conjures images of the classic programming they were known for like Attack oo the Show!, Cheat!, and X-Play. Attack of the Show! was a daily live-show that offered viewers the inside scoop on pop culture, video games, technology, and entertainment. Meanwhile, Cheat! was a show that offered viewers cheat codes, strategies, and other hidden features within their favorite games. Finally, X-Play, another classic of the network, offered reviews and skits concerning games and the like. These shows are a staple for the network and what many consider the core of what G4 was about. It would be downright silly for the network not to utilize the love many have for these classic titles and bring them back in some form or another.
New Programming and Entertainment
Of course, it is obvious that the classic programming G4 offered wasn’t quite enough the keep the network around. While those shows are great and will surely bring fans back, it is important that the new G4 has more to offer. Let’s hope we get some original content that becomes our new favorite thing to binge. In a field that can get weighted down by the same old stuff, let’s hope G4 comes out swinging with original programming and such that make us question why they ever left in the first place.
A Mix of Returning Hosts and Some New Blood
The gaming world looks a bit different than it did when G4 TV blinked out in 2014. There is a stronger emphasis placed on being diverse and inclusive when it comes to gaming and gaming news. Therefore, when G4 programming returns, let’s hope that we see some of our favorite faces pop back up, like Kevin Pereira, Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, and Olivia Munn. But, let’s also hope we see some new faces that offer different takes and viewpoints on games and the industry. Let’s be introduced to our new favorite hosts and personalities that get us excited for gaming and tech news.
Anime Unleashed…Again?
Beyond video game programming, G4TV was also noted for its block of anime programming known as Anime Unleashed. While only lasting a few years on the network, this block of programming offered original anime series that focused heavily on tech, the future, and sci-fi themes. With anime remaining a popular thread in the mainstream, it would make sense for the network to revive its original anime programming. Plus, you can never have enough anime to obsess over.
Something Brand Spanking New
With G4 not returning until sometime next year, it is impossible to know exactly what they have planned. However, we hope that it is something not done before. Let’s hope that when G4 returns they bring with them something we have never seen before! Let’s hope they change the landscape of gaming news and content and revitalize the industry!
