Prior to the official reveal of Elden Ring, A Song of Ice and Fire writer George R. R. Martin revealed he was consulting on a video game out of Japan. This led to much speculation about the project, and for many, the truth may have exceeded expectation. As it turned out, Martin is consult on From Software’s upcoming Souls-like title, which itself would have been more than enough. From Software (and Hidetaka Miyazaki) has a reputation for its quality, and even without Martin’s name attached, Elden Ring would like find itself in the same conversation as Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadow Dies Twice....

Console wars are nothing new. Back in the Sega Genesis and SNES days, Sega tried to convince audiences that their console did what Nintendon’t (and vice versa). But with the advent of cross-play and cross-progression in more recent console generations, companies like Sony and Microsoft have largely been content to play nice with each other. Lately though, they have gone back to their old, competitive ways, especially in 2022. Microsoft struck first with a surprise announcement: The company planned to purchase Activision Blizzard....

Just a day after the official launch of the Xbox Series X, one thing seemed to dominate the conversation around Microsoft’s next-gen console: a series of viral videos allegedly depicting a major overheating issue, as thick clouds of smoke were desperately expelled through the console’s top vents. Wolfenstein: Youngblood puts a fresh spin on the franchise by going all-on on co-op gameplay. The title can be played with an AI partner, but it’s clear that the developers really want gamers to experience to Nazi-slaying sisters with a friend. With that in mind, the game is really pushing online play and even offers a Buddy Pass to help hook other players and get them invested. Playing Wolfenstein: Youngblood online is fairly straightforward and the game is great about drop in and drop out experiences....

The new minis from Wyrd are just about ready to jack into GenCon, in a Cyberpunk 1988 themed limited edition set for Malifaux. Malifaux, now in its third edition, is a tabletop miniature combat game that sees small groups fight it out in skirmish battles. Originally launched in 2009 at GenCon, it last received the update treatment in June 2019, with a streamlined edition that gave easier games to play. The Nightmare Edition releases are a limited edition set of themed miniatures that can be used in Malifaux and usually launched in conjunction with GenCon....

Last Friday marked one week since the release of the controversial The Last of Us 2. Regardless of how fans feel about it, it seems that the leaks and hate surrounding the game didn’t deter it too much, as it sold more than four million copies in just those first seven days. The Last of Us 2 has been a hot topic even weeks before it released thanks to some leaks which painted the game in a negative light....

Although Tha Game Awards was a busy affair at the end of last year, there was one company conspicuous by its absence. Very little noise came from Xbox. Many believed this was because it planned to hold its own online event instead, to update us on its big 2023 releases. And so that has turned out to be the case. A Developer_Direct presentation will be streamed online today, 25 January, which will give us extended gameplay showcases on several major in-house titles, including Forza Motorsport and Redfall....

While Canadian gamers are still reeling after watching the PS4 increase in price in their region, gamers in the US are seeing the price for Microsoft’s new console, the Xbox One, head in the opposite direction. It may not be for long though, so gamers who are on the fence better act fast. It all started earlier today, when one Walmart consumer discovered that their Xbox One purchase had been discounted from the regular $500 price tag for the console to $450....

Mouse and keyboard support for the Xbox One has long been promised, with discussion on the subject even dating back to four years ago when Xbox head Phil Spencer spoke about cross-platform play between PC and console. The latest update in the lengthy saga comes from Corporate Vice President of Gaming at Microsoft Mike Ybarra, who stated that mouse and keyboard support will make its way to users sometime soon....

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is packed full of subquests, as well as additional quests via the Part-time Hero feature. One of these quests is to find and retrieve 10 different cats, and it’s well worth doing as you are rewarded with two million yen, plus a new Poundmate! This quest can be picked up as early as chapter five, but it won’t automatically appear as you progress like the other Part-time Hero quests....

When new console generations launch, games that released on the last major gaming systems frequently make a migration to the next-gen systems in short order. Such is the case with Yakuza-universe spin-off Judgment, which is now revealed to be coming to next-gen consoles and game streaming. Judgment, which is set in the same fictional Japanese district of Kamurocho as the mainline Yakuza games, takes a slightly different path from the traditional beat-’em-ups....

The last time we heard from Zombieland was in Double Tap: Road Trip, a top-down twin-stick shooter that really didn’t bring much to the table other than a bit more Zombieland. Which was fine if you were really looking for a bit more to the Zombieland story, but the rest of it was pretty generic for the genre. Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever looks to be along the same lines as Double Tap: Road Trip–a generic shooter set in the Zombieland universe where all you do is shoot zombies by the dozen....

The original Resident Evil games were known for their use of fixed camera angles, which were used to great effect by the franchise’s development team to create an eerie atmosphere and strategically placed jump scares. More recent games in the series have moved away from fixed camera angles to over-the-shoulder perspectives, which is true for the recently released Resident Evil 3 remake. However, one fan has used photo mode to show what the game would look like with fixed camera angles....

Spelling does count, and there is a one minute timer on each set of words, meaning players will need to go quickly. This concept is nothing new, as there are many mobile apps which ask players to unscramble or make words out of seemingly random letters, but it may be one of the first big name games to be a purely smart home device based game, and perhaps more will follow in the future....
